Ever wonder why some people always look great in photos while others feel awkward and stiff? The secret isn't about being naturally photogenic - it's about knowing a few simple posing tricks that work every single time.

As a Chicago portrait photographer, I coach clients through posing during every session, but I wanted to share my two favorite go-to tips so you can practice before your next photoshoot - whether that's a professional family session, a headshot, or just a night out with friends.

I walk through exactly how to do both of these techniques step by step, so you can practice at home and feel confident before we shoot together!

Tip #1: Bend It

Here's the golden rule of posing: if it can bend, it should be bent. Straight lines and locked joints read as stiff and unnatural in photos, while bent lines create movement, dimension, and flattering curves.

This applies from head to toe - your legs, elbows, and even the tilt of your shoulders all play a role in creating a naturally beautiful shape in photos.

Tip #2: Be a Turtle

This one sounds silly, but it works every time. Gently bring your forehead or ears slightly forward while keeping your shoulders relaxed and in place. This simple movement elongates your neck, minimizes a double chin, and defines your jawline - instantly.

Practice Makes Perfect

TThe best part about these two tips? You can practice them anywhere - in the mirror, before a big event, or right before we start your session together. Once your body learns the movement, it becomes second nature.
